Johnny Robèrt

Drum Tutor & School Director

Grade 8 Drums - Trinity

10+ years professional

Johnny’s number one passion is sharing his knowledge and skills on the drumset. Drumming has always been a massive part of his life. His father introduced him to the drums at the age of 7 and Johnny joined his first band and performed publically at school assemblies and events since 9 years old.

Fast forward to his 20s and Johnny became a regular drummer in many local original and cover bands where he played most weekends around the local scene and parts of NZ.

Johnny discovered his ability to teach while recovering from a horrific accident in 2011. He lost 3 digits on his right hand while working in a sawmill over the summer break. The loss did not stop him, it motivated him to work harder toward his goals.

After he completed his degree in photography and design he decided that it was time to revisit his roots in music. Since 2015 Johnny had built a successful music school - teaching hundreds of students, working as drum tutor for local high schools, achieving a distinction in Grade 8 Drums from Trinity, and joined various music groups across a wide range of genres.

His philosophy is that music is a really important part of a person’s development as it provides confidence, social, and technical skills. It’s also a really good way to be creative and explore your personality.

Cody Kivell

Guitar Tutor & Band Mentor

Grade 8 Guitar - Trinity

The Rising Tide

Cody began playing guitar at the age of 11 and has spent the last 4 years teaching both privately and in schools. He is also studying to become a full-time high-school teacher. In 2013 he achieved Grade 8 Trinity Guitar in Rock and Pop.

Cody has a very modern and personal approach to teaching. There is no one path to becoming a good musician. That’s why Cody takes the time to create custom course content for each student based on what brings them the most success and joy.

Cody has a lot of experience in music production and loves using this knowledge to record and produce music for my students outside of normal lesson times. He has played in many bands of varying genres over the years and aims to provide his students with the tools to help them branch out into performing and production.

Karl began drumming on a desk 30 years ago after his best mate showed off his rhythm skills. He progressed to a drum set soon after and became a top student in performance and composition at Paraparaumu College.

Karl has played professionally in various styles in Manawatu over the past 10 years. He loves the collaborative aspect of drumming and encourages his students to appreciate the music as a whole and tune their playing to serve the song.

Karl also plays guitar and Native American flute. He recognizes the power of music for relaxation and self-expression and helps his students discover that on their own terms.

Karl still drums on tables and whatever sounds good to him. He has a particular interest in folk percussion (spoons, washboard, bones, etc) and believes that once you have the music in you, anything is an instrument.
